War tribunal's security raises question
An armed man approached the International Crimes Tribunal courtroom during its proceeding hours yesterday morning evading tight security.
Police said Mozaffar Ahmad Khan went up to the first floor of the tribunal carrying two licensed revolvers. He escaped the metal detector archway placed at the main gate of the old High Court building where the tribunal is set up for trying the 1971 war criminals.
The law enforcers caught Mozaffar on his way to the courtroom where the judges of the tribunal were hearing a petition moved by the prosecution for showing four top Jamaat-e-Islami leaders arrested in a war crimes case.
Mozaffar claimed himself commander of Dhaka District Muktijoddha Unit and told the law enforcers that he carried the arms for his own security.
Police later forced him to leave the tribunal area.
Mozaffar sued Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and seven others with Keraniganj Police Station for killing his nephew and one of his comrades on November 25, 1971.
Talking to The Daily Star, tribunal's Registrar Md Shahinur Islam expressed concern over the incident. He asked the officials concerned to deal with the security measures strictly.
