Jubo League man killed by toll takers
A local Jubo League leader, who was tortured on Friday night at his business centre by extortionists in the capital's Kafrul area, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital yesterday.
The deceased Gias Uddin, 25, was president of unit-7 Jubo League of East Shewrapara.
His elder brother Bachchu Mian said a gang of 20 youths led by local extortionist Mahbub swooped on Gias and his friend Tareque while they were sitting inside his own hotel in the area on Friday night.
Mahbub and his gang severely beat Gias and Tareque with iron rods and bamboo sticks leaving them critically injured.
They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later Gias was shifted to Briton Hospital in Hatirpool area.
Bachchu said Mahbub had been threatening Gias for Tk 50,000 as extortion for five days before the attack. Gias refused to pay the toll.
Gias used to run his family hotel business and also run a cooperative, Nirghoom Samabai Samity, in the area.
Mahbub had been threatening Gias to pay regularly for running the cooperative, he said.
Following the attack, victim's father filed an extortion case against Mahbub and 15 others with Kafrul police station but police said the case would be converted into a murder case after the death of Gias.
Office-in-charge Anisur Rahman of Kafrul police station said they on Saturday arrested prime accused Mahbub and are trying to arrest the rest.
