BCL men clash with cops at Rajshahi IHT
At least 10 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists were injured in a clash with police last night at Rajshahi Institute of Health Technology (IHT) over distribution of admit cards among admission seekers.
Earlier in the morning, the BCL workers demanded that the IHT authorities allow their men to engage in distribution of admit cards among some 2,635 admission seekers and collecting money from them, police and IHT sources said.
But as the IHT authorities refused to entertain their demand, they locked the principal and some other teachers in the principal's office at about 6:00pm and vandalised furniture of some classrooms.
At this stage, the college authorities called police. When police arrived at the scene and attempted to take control of the institute, the BCL men clashed with police promoting them to charge the BCL men with batons.
The injured BCL men Shafiqul Islam, Mirza Monirul Islam and Moqbul Hossain were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in critical conditions.
Police arrested nine BCL activists including the three admitted to the RMCH in connection with the incident. The other arrestees are Imran Hossain, Shahidul Islam, Sourav, Shakib Rana, Sanjeeb and Dulal Hossain of the institute.
Meanwhile, the academic council of IHT in an emergency meeting last night expelled five students for confining and assaulting the principal other teachers, Principal Dr Shahjahan Ali told The Daily Star.
All the residential students were asked to vacate the halls by this morning, the principal said adding that all other activities of the institute including admission and regular exams will take place as scheduled.
