Truck workers clash in city, 25 injured
At least 25 people, including eight students of the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and the Glass and Ceramic College, were injured during a clash between two groups of transport workers at Tejgaon Truck Stand in the city last night.
The clash took place following a row over the election of Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Drivers' Union scheduled to be held today at Kalabagan playground.
At least 200 drivers and helpers of trucks and covered vans also went on a rampage in the area during the hour-long clash that erupted at around 10:00pm.
Of the injured, four students were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while others to local hospitals, the police said.
The injured students were identified as Moniruzzaman, Tuhin, Sajal and Mamun of the Glass amd Ceramic College and Naim, Rifat, Rajab and Dulal of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute.
The students claimed that they were attacked when they were crossing the area, but the police suspect that one of the clashing groups might have hired the students for the clash.
