Continue helping Bangladesh
BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia yesterday urged the visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping to continue Beijing's support to Bangladesh's infrastructures development, particularly in air-rail-sea communications.
The leader of the opposition made the request when she made a courtesy call on Chinese Vice President Xi at Sonargaon Hotel in the morning, reports UNB.
The Chinese vice president yesterday left for Laos ending a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni saw the Chinese leader off at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 3:00pm.
During the meeting with Khaleda Zia that lasted for about an hour from 10:00am, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest.
Khaleda also requested Vice President Xi for Chinese cooperation in setting up deep seaport at Sonadia in Cox's Bazar for expanding sea trade globally.
The Chinese leader responded positively, BNP Vice Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury who was present at the meeting told reporters.
“You are our old and trusted friend,” Chinese Vice President Xi was quoted as saying to Khaleda Zia.
Xi recalled the excellent bilateral and diplomatic relations between Dhaka and Beijing that had started during the late president Ziaur Rahman's period and strengthened during the periods of Khaleda Zia as the prime minister.
The Chinese vice president specially invited Khaleda Zia to visit China and she accepted the invitation. The visit will take place at a mutually convenient time for the two sides.
Khaleda Zia thanked Vice President Xi for massive contribution of China in different sectors particularly in communication infrastructure including roads and bridges.
She also mentioned that Dhaka and Beijing shared common views on different global issues in different international forums.
Later, the Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping called on President Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban.
Meanwhile, the Chinese leader joined a luncheon hosted by Speaker of the Parliament Advocate Abdul Hamid.
CHINESE VICE PRESIDENT PLACES WREATH AT NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping also paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the War of Liberation in 1971 by placing a wreath at the National Memorial at Savar, reports BSS.
After placing the wreath, he stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the memory of the martyrs. He later signed the visitors' book there.
Earlier, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan received the Chinese leader at the memorial.
