Plan to train 62,000 volunteers to tackle quake risks

The government will train up 62,000 volunteers to tackle the risks of earthquake in the country.
Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence has already completed training of 1,000 volunteers with assistance from the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen ANM Shahidullah said this while informing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the Fire Brigade's activities at Gano Bhaban yesterday.
The Fire Service DG on behalf of his department went to Gano Bhaban to donate Tk 100,000 to the Prime Minister's Relief and Welfare Fund.
Various institutions and persons yesterday donated Tk 65 lakh in aid of the victims of the Neemtoli and Begunbari fire and building collapse tragedy.
Hasina thanked the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence for their hectic efforts during the disasters.
In this regard, she mentioned that her government has a plan to set up fire stations at every upazila of the country.
The Fire Brigade director general further informed the PM that the process is at the final stage to collect 1400 fireproof suits for the fire fighters.
Meanwhile, officers and employees of the Ministry of Forest and Environment also donated their one day's salary worth Tk 386,601 to the PM's Relief Fund. The amount includes seven days' salary of State Minister for Forest and Environment Dr Hasan Mahmud.
Earlier, in the morning, teachers and employees of Jagannath University have donated their one day's salary to the PM's Relief Fund. Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor handed over the cheque to the Prime Minister at her office at Bangladesh Secretariat.
