12 more observation posts to be set up
Twelve new observation posts and a border outpost will be set up at Dibir haor in Jaintapur upazila and at Padua in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet to contain smuggling and other border incidents.
BDR Director General (DG) Major General Rafiqul Islam said this during his recent visit to the bordering areas. He talked to the local people who have foiled several attempts by the Indians to occupy some Bangladesh lands and a water body on Jaintapur border during the last four months.
He said the observation posts would help contain illegal entry of Indians into Bangladesh territory and other border troubles including attempt of grabbing border land by Indian tribesmen.
The Indians have been trying to establish their claim on about 300 acres of land in Dibir haor and Kendri beel in Jaintapur since January this year. They also picked up a BDR man on February 4 and kept him confined for about 10 hours.
They also made several attempts to catch fish in Dibir haor and Kendri beel, but locals with the help of Bangladesh border guards foiled their attempts. The Indians also tried to capture Bangladesh land on Padua border in Gowainghat upazila.
Khasia people backed by BSF tried to capture Dibir haor on February 14. Locals with the help of BDR build up resistance to the attempt that led to a gun battle between the border guards of the two countries.
