Rajuk starts demolition
Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) started knocking down a seven-storey illegal building in the city's east Begunbari yesterday, three days after it tilted.
Three buildings including the seven-storey building, Saturday's tilted five-storey building at Nakhalpara and another four-storey building at Gendaria are illegal, as these were built without approval from Rajuk, said executive magistrate Rokon-Ud-Dowla who led the demolition.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, the seven-storey building's owner started demolition of his building with around ten workers following Friday's Rajuk notice.
A Rajuk team comprised of an authorised officer, building inspector and 30 labourers led by Rokon joined the demolition work yesterday morning.
"We will continue the work till tomorrow (today) and allow the owner some time to complete it," said Rokon.
Rajuk labourers knocked down the under-construction sixth floor and partition walls of the fifth floor yesterday.
Rajuk, however, will take time to start knocking down the tilted five-storey building at Nakhalpara till next week, said Shafiqul Islam, authorised officer of the agency.
The building at KB Road in Gendaria actually did not tilt but it is illegal, as it was built without Rajuk approval, said Aminur Rahman Suman, another authorised officer of Rajuk.
Authorities have allowed the building owner one week for demolishing the building, he added.
"In case the owner does not demolish it, we will do the work," said Suman.
On June 1 a five-storey building collapsed at Begunbari that left 25 people killed and some others injured.
