Jubo League leader shot dead, 15 hurt as AL men clash
A Jubo League leader was shot dead by rivals in Bogra while 15 people were injured as two factions of ruling Awami League clashed in Jhenidah yesterday.
According to our Staff Correspondent in Bogra, a Jubo League leader was killed and another critically wounded allegedly by their party rivals at Shibati in the town early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Sakhawat Hossain Jewel, 30, a Jubo League leader of Bogra town unit and former joint secretary of district Chhatra League.
Police said armed Jubo League rivals belonging to Ropon group stormed into the office of Shibati Shebok Samity and opened fire on Jewel and Uzzal, 29, while they were watching TV at about 1:30am. The attackers also stabbed them indiscriminately.
Jewel died on the spot while Uzzal was admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Jewel's father Shajahan Ali Saju later lodged a case accusing six people including Ropon and his father Khokon Sarker.
Sub-inspector Abdur Razzak of Bogra Sadar police station told this correspondent that the attack might be a sequel to an intra-party feud.
In Jhenidah, at least 15 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League (AL) at Ektarpur village under Kaliganj upazila.
Long-standing rivalry between AL ward president Alauddin and AL ward secretary Barik Mia triggered the clash, villagers said.
Locals and police said, Barik was returning home on Friday along with others from a wedding party at Ghoppara village. When they reached Monglepaita Bazar loyalists of Alauddin waylaid Barik and hacked him.
Locals took Barik to Jessore Sadar Hospital in a critical condition.
The incident triggered a fierce clash between the two groups yesterday morning.
Supporters of the two leaders from Debrajpur and Ektarpur villages attacked each other with billhook, sticks and other lethal weapons injuring at least 15 from both groups.
The injured Barik loyalists are Hashem, Arshed and Jahid while injured supporters of Alauddin include Shariful, Ashraful, Ohidul, Moslem, Idrish, Babul Hossain and Atiar Rahman.
Of the injured, Babul's right hand has been cut off from wrist by billhook. He is a student of honours second year at MM College.
