One killed as workers clash in Pabna
A suspended labour union leader and his cohorts hacked a labourer of a seed-processing centre to death and injured five others near its premises, yesterday.
Following the incident, authorities suspended all operations at Tebunia Seed Processing Centre under Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC).
The deceased was identified as Abul Kashem, 50, a van puller who worked as a labourer at the centre. He was also brother of Abul Hashem, a labour union leader of the organization.
The officials of the centre said Mohammad Ali, another labour union leader and Abul Hashem were rivals and belonged to Sramik League backed by the ruling party.
Sources said Mohammad Ali with his cohorts who were suspended earlier tried to force entry into the farm by beating up Md. Mokter Hossain, 35, a guard. Other workers rushed to the spot and rescued him.
They chased the attackers who left the premises but hacked Abul Kashem along with five other workers who were outside the premises. Kashem was critically injured and died after he was brought to Pabna General Hospital.
Police has arrested three of the suspected attackers, said Md. Motiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Pabna Police Station.
Joint Director of Tebunia Seed Processing Center, Md. Ataur Rahman told The Daily Star about recent suspension of five labourers including Mohammad Ali on grounds of indiscipline.
