2 more bodies recovered
With the recovery of two more bodies from the rubble of the Tuesday's collapsed building in the city, rescuers yesterday morning concluded their operation.
The building toppled onto three tin-shed houses at Madhya Begunbari at the night that left 25 people killed and around 30 others injured.
Tk 20,000 has been given to each of the deceased's families but around 140 other families, which became homeless due to the disaster, did not get any help.
Around 50 families became homeless due to the collapse of their building and tin-shed structures. About 30 families have also been evicted for the rescue operation while 60 for residing in faulty constructed houses.
Members of those families were seen elapsing time along with their kids, women and older people under the open sky beside the roads without treatment facilities, foods and water.
Power, water and gas supply to area remained cut off till filing of this report last night.
Dhaka district Deputy Commissioner Md Mohibul Haque, however, told The Daily Star that they will give Tk 5,000 to 10,000 to each victim family for losing their valuables while Tk 5,000 to each injured victim. He said a list is being prepared in this regard.
Asked about the rehabilitation, the DC said some families have been evicted as they resided in different risky houses and some others for rescue operation.
"Now we are penniless, foodless and totally helpless as my husband got his salary day before the disaster, but we could not recover the money and even any valuable from the debris," said injured housewife Marjina, who was rescued with her 2-year-old daughter Jannat two hours after the collapse.
"My only sari that I am wearing got torn out when I was trapped inside the rubble. We are seeking help from neighbours, but we did not get any help as their condition is also the same," she told The Daily Star yesterday.
Talking to The Daily Star, Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) Director General Brig Gen Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah said after removing entire debris from the spot the rescue operation has been closed, as there was no more claim of missing person.
FSCD officials said they rescued the body of 22-year old housewife Anwara Begum and 33-year old shopkeeper Babul Mollah yesterday morning.
Anwara's three children--two sons and a daughter--were also killed in the disaster.
Of the 25 deceased, 11 were female and seven children. 24 bodies were received by their relatives and the rest one is still to be identified.
Rajuk official Shafiqul Islam filed a case with Tejgaon Police Station against Zafar Iqbal Dalim, son of the owner of the building, for constructing the structure without approval.
