AL men free railway land from illegal occupancy
A group of ruling party men demolished around 50 illegal establishments on a piece of railway land in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga Thursday afternoon.
Police described the incident as “an action against illegal occupants”.
A few locals took lease on the Alamdanga railway property during the previous BNP and caretaker government, railway sources said.
The lessees built concrete and tin-shed buildings, and opened up small businesses on the land which they took for agricultural purpose, they added.
Some AL activists a few months ago petitioned the railway authorities to evict the traders from the land.
The authorities informed higher authorities about the matter.
Kiron Chandra Roy, divisional state officer of railway, Paksey, came to Alamdanga and visited the spot.
“I instructed the Alamdanga railway authorities to enquire into the matter and take necessary steps,” said Kiron over the phone yesterday.
On Thursday, a group of about 50 AL men around 3:00pm asked the businessmen to move out within an hour.
The group led by Chhatra League, Alamdanga upazila unit president Tafsir Ahmed Lal and general secretary of the unit Sariful Islam started vandalising the structures by hammer, crowbar and other tools.
No police or railway staffs came to the spot during the mayhem between 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
When contacted, Kiron said he had heard about the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Alamdanga Police Station Ilias Fakir told this correspondent over the phone yesterday that local protesters were behind the action.
He also said nobody came to file a complaint with the police station as the shop owners were running businesses illegally with the help of some railway officials.
Despite repeated attempts this correspondent could not reach the BCL leaders.
