Nazrul's birth anniversary today
The 111th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam will be celebrated across the country today.
Nazrul, the rebel poet of Bengali literature, was born at Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal on this day in 1899.
Through his poems, Nazrul had inspired people to fight against injustice and repression during the British colonial rule. His songs and poems were also a major source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the Liberation War in 1971.
The government and various socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the birthday of the national poet in a befitting manner.
President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have given separate special messages describing the colourful life of the great poet and his contributions to the Bengali language and literature.
President Zillur said, "Nazrul was a bright star of Bengali language and literature. He always remained vocal against injustice, oppression and superstitions."
In her message, Prime Minister Hasina said, "Nazrul, a poet of equality, humanity, youth and rebellion, enriched Bengali language and literature through his writings."
Opposition Leader Khaleda said, "Kazi Nazrul Islam is an undisputed poet in the Bengali literature. He gave a new dimension to Bengali literature by his writings against repression and injustice."
As part of the national celebration, the main programmes of the day will be held at Darirampur under Trishal in Mymensingh. President Zillur Rahman is expected to inaugurate the function around 11:30am. The state run radio station--Bangladesh Betar will air the programmes live.
Different socio-cultural and political organisations will place wreath at the poet's tomb on Dhaka University campus in the morning.
Awami League (AL) will place wreath at the grave of the poet at 8:00am. AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam called upon party leaders and workers to celebrate the day with due respect.
Bangla Academy will hold a discussion and cultural programme in its seminar room at 4:30pm.
Nazrul Institute will arrange a poem recitation competition for children at its Dhanmondhi office in the city at 4:00pm on May 26. The Institute will also arrange a session of singing the songs of Nazrul by children on the next day morning.
Special programmes on Nazrul's works including his plays, poetry and songs will be broadcast by TV channels and radio stations marking the national poet's birthday.
Various programmes have been arranged in Chittagong, Comilla and Daulatpur.
Local administrations across the country will arrange various programmes. Bangladesh missions abroad will also celebrate the day through different programmes.
