Lightning kills nine

At least nine people were killed and seven others injured by lightning in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Narayangang districts yesterday.
About five persons were killed and two others injured at Nageshwari upazila of the district when lightning struck a local house yesterday morning, reports our Kurigram correspondent.
The victims were Hazera Begum, 37, Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, 4, wife and son of Badiar Rahman and three day-labourers-- Makbul Hossain, 36, Hafijur Rahman, 30 and Amjad Hossen, 40, of the upazila.
Police and locals said five day-labourers were working in a paddy field adjacent to the house owned by Badiar. They took shelter in the house when rain came.
The lightning struck the house at around 8:30am, which left the five persons, including Badiar's wife and son, dead and two others critically injured, sources said.
The injured were rushed to a local clinic.
Officer-in-charge Manjur Rahman of Nageshwari police station confirmed the deaths.
At least three persons were killed and five others were injured by lightning at three different villages under the district's Aditmari and Sadar upazila yesterday, our Lalmonirhat correspondents adds.
The victims were identified as Nomita Rani,27, Amina Begum,25, of Aditmari upazila and Momen Uddin,36 of Sadar upazila.
Police and locals said, Nomita was hit by lightning as she was returning home from a local temple at around 2:30pm while Amina Begum fell victim to it while doing her household chores in the courtyard at the same time.
Momen, a local farmer, was killed by lightning as he was working in paddy field at noon.
Lightning struck a housewife at Sadar upazila of the district Sunday night, our Narayanganj correspondent adds.
The victim was Ayesha Begum, 45, wife of Abdus Salam of Sidhirganj.
Sources said lightning struck her as she went out to bathe during the storm.
