'No plan to restore HK visa waiver for Bangladeshis'
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China has no immediate plan to restore visa waiver policy for Bangladeshi nationals but will extend adequate facilities to bona fide Bangladeshis, including businessmen.
Hong Kong scrapped the visa waiver programme for Bangladeshis in 2006. Presently, only India from the South Asia region enjoys visa waiver programme of Hong Kong.
There is no possibility of bringing any changes to the visa waiver policy for Bangladeshis, said Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Immigration Department Corrado Chow.
Talking to reporters at Westin Hotel in the city, visiting Hong Kong immigration officials said visa waiver is determined on a number of factors like immigration and security, social and economic status, trade ties and track record of a country.
Chow said genuine Bangladeshi applicants with sufficient travel documents can apply for Hong Kong visa. Usually it takes four weeks to complete the process of granting visa, he said, adding that they also issue visa for emergency travel within the shortest possible time.
