Robber killed in shootout in Chittagong
A robber was killed and another injured in a shootout at Purbo Gumdandi under Boalkhali upazila of the district early yesterday.
Police recovered two light guns and five rounds of bullets from the spot.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Kader, 35, son of Abul Mansur of Syednagar village and the injured Md Rokonuddin, son of Tunu Mia of Charandip village under the same upazila.
Police said a gang of some 20 robbers entered the house of Md Zafar around 12:45am. Sensing their presence the inmates of the house immediately informed the police over phone. They were much alert to resist the robbers as one of their family members was killed by the robbers in December last year.
As they reached near the spot the robbers started firing prompting them to retaliate with bullets resulting a gunfight between them where some 25 rounds of bullets were traded, said the police.
In the meantime villagers also joined hands with police but the robbers managed to flee the spot.
Later, police held two of the robbers lying in the adjoining fields receiving bullets beneath their knees. They also recovered weapons and bullets from their possession.
The injured robbers were admitted to a local hospital. Later they were shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared one of them dead, said Officer-in-Charge Abdul Malek of Boalkhali police station.
However, Abdul Malek and Rokonuddin have 10 and 16 robbery cases against them respectively.
A case was lodged with Boalkhali police station in this connection.
