One gets life term for killing wife

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a person to life term rigorous imprisonment for killing his wife that took place in 2001.
The court of District and Sessions Judge Abdul Kuddus Mia gave the verdict against Kamal Uddin, son of late Matiur Rahman of West Barguna village under Banshkhali upazila for strangling his wife Rasheda Begum on January 13 in 2001.
The court also fined Kamal Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer one year more in jail.
The court also sentenced Kamal to two years rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 1000, in default, to suffer one month more in jail on charge of attempting to hide the body and trying to circulate the killing as suicide by putting poison in the mouth of dead Rasheda.
According to the prosecution, Kamal beat up his wife Rasheda Begum and strangled her in their village home on January 13 in 2001 as she protested her husband's extra-marital affairs.
Victim's father Abdul Karim filed a case with Banshkhali Police Station in this regard while police submitted charge sheet on January 9 in 2007.
The charge was framed on October 8 in 2007.
The court pronounced the verdict yesterday after hearing nine witnesses.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Abul Hashem told The Daily Star that the convicted tried to circulate the incident as suicide by putting poison in Rasheda's mouth.
But viscera report and post-mortem reports later revealed that the victim was strangled, Hashem added.
