Bangladesh elected UNDP executive board member
Bangladesh has been elected member in the executive board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from the Asian Group at an election held at the UN headquarters yesterday morning.
The country will work as a member of the board guiding the UNDP's worldwide activities for a three-year term from 2011 to 2013, according to a press release.
Bangladesh won the board membership winning more votes than the Philippines and South Korea.
Of the 53 member states (one remained absent during voting) of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Bangladesh won 39 votes, the Philippines 15 and South Korea 8 votes. China was also elected member getting 41 votes.
As the UNDP administrator coordinates the activities of four important agencies of the UN--UNDP, UNFPA, WFP and UNICEF, Bangladesh will get opportunity to play important role in policymaking level.
As an elected member of the UNDP-UNFPA, Bangladesh would be able to use its development experience in the comity of nations, as well as playing a pioneering role in assessing the needs of developing countries and solving their problems.
