Tributes paid to Samad Azad
Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday said veteran politician Abdus Samad Azad had an active political career.
“His name will remain written in golden letters in the history of the country as a few people had a long political career like him,” Muhith said at a commemorating meeting in the city.
The Abdus Samad Azad Foundation organised the discussion marking the 5th death anniversary of the veteran politician at Bangladesh Shishu Academy.
Awami League leader Abdul Jalil and Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran spoke at the meeting with Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
The finance minister said Azad had sacrificed a lot in his political life. He had to spend a long time in jail, and went into hiding in his early age, he added.
Azad was a progressive leader and was always loyal to his ideology. At the same time, he had understanding with the people of his opposite ideologies, Muhith added.
The minister paid his respect to this veteran political leader and said Azad played a vital role in writing the foreign policy of the country.
Prof Arefin said the Azad foundation has to inform the members of new generation that a political leader like Azad was active in country's political arena.
He said family members of Azad have decided to form a trust fund after the name of the late Awami League leader at DU to award brilliant and meritorious students.
