Carcass of young whale found in Sundarbans
The carcass of a 12-foot-long whale was found lying on the bank of a canal at Sheolarchar in the Sundarbans on November 22, seven days after the cyclone Sidr struck the country's southern coast.
The carcass of the young sperm whale is still lying there, said Jahangir Alam, coordinator of the Bangladesh Cetacean Diversity Project (BCDP), yesterday.
The whale might have died after being swept away by the tidal surge triggered by the cyclone, he added.
Jahangir said he and three others of the project went to Sheolarchar after receiving information that a whale was found dead there.
"We have collected its teeth, skin and fat as samples to conduct tests on them to find out the real cause of its death," he added.
Three other members of the team are Research Coordinator Rubaiyat Mansur, Educational Coordinator Elizabeth Mansur and zoologist Brian D Smith.
Sperm whales are generally found in the tropical and polar regions. A sperm whale can grow up to 70 feet in length.
