Two killed as storm lashes Khagrachhari
Two people were killed and 20 others injured as a storm lashed 15 villages in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ashak Mollah, 55, of Rashiknagar village and Doyal Chakma, 32, of Gulchhari village in the upazila.
Ashak died in roof collapse while Doyal killed by lightning, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Maksuder Rahman said quoting the family members.
The injured were admitted to the upazila health complex.
The ASP said the storm swept over 15 hilly villages at about 3:00am and damaged about 1,000 thatched and tin-shed houses and police posts.
It also uprooted a number of trees and damaged crops on vast tracts of land, he added.
The number of injured could be double, he added.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Moniruzzaman Miah said the extent of damage might be three times higher than the local administration estimated till noon.
“We are yet to provide any assistance to the affected people as we did not get actual figure of the damage till noon. We will get it by the evening,” he added.
