HC rejects Saidee's appeal for bail extension

The High Court yesterday rejected a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Saidee for extending his bail order in a case filed for committing crimes against humanity in Pirojpur.
An HC bench of Justice MA Wahhab Miah and Justice JBM Hasan rejected the petition considering that it was not submitted to the court.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told The Daily Star that police now could arrest Saidee in this case, since the HC did not extend its order of bail to him.
During the hearing of the petition, the HC bench refused to extend its earlier order granting anticipatory bail to Sayeedee in the case following the arguments placed by the attorney general.
Saidee appeared before the HC bench for extension of the bail order.
The attorney general told the court that the name of Delwar Hossain Saidee is in a list of the war criminals.
Since a special tribunal has been formed recently to try the cases filed for committing crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation War, Saidee should not be granted bail in the case, he said.
The attorney general also placed a list of the names of war criminals to the court.
Mahbubul Hawlader of Zia Nagar upazila in Pirojpur filed the case with Zia Nagar Police Station on September 8, 2009 against Saidee on charges of killing some of his relatives and looting in Pirojpur in June 1971.
The HC on March 29 this year granted anticipatory bail to Saidee for a week. The court later on extended its order till April 19.
