Jamaat man held in Ctg
A Jamaat activist, accused in a case filed against Jamaat-Shibir men for attacking police, was arrested in Chittagong yesterday.
Police filed the case accusing 1,500 to 2,000 leaders and activists of Jamaat and its associated student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir, including former lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury, of attacking police at the city's Andarkilla intersection on Monday.
Police said around 30 leaders and activists of Jamaat's Kotwali (South) unit brought out a procession from the city's Baish Moholla Mosque around 5:15pm as part of their scheduled programmes to press home their demands of withdrawal of the case and release of the arrested party activists.
Police intercepted the procession in Station Road area, triggering a scuffle between the law enforcers and the Jamaat men.
Later, Badruddin Omar, 40, son of Kalam Uddin of Lohagara upazila in the district, was arrested on the spot for scuffling with police, said Sadarghat Camp in-charge Sergeant HM Siddiqur Rahman.
“I was hurt in the scuffle," he said. "Badruddin was arrested for scuffling with police, and he is an accused in the case filed for attacking police on Monday.”
Jamaat-Shibir activists attacked police on Monday following interception of their procession protesting foiling of a conference scheduled for Sunday in the port city where Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed was due to be the chief guest.
