Man jumps to death as police raid hotel

A middle-aged man jumped to death from the rooftop of a five-storey residential hotel at city's Ananda Bazaar during a police raid at the hotel yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Sabuj, 45.
Employees of Bangaraaj Hotel claimed that the man was a boarder at the hotel.
Witnesses said the incident occurred around 2:00pm when a team of plain-clothes police from Shahbagh Police Station raided the hotel acting on information that anti-social activities were taking place in the hotel.
According to the staff, on hearing about the police raid, the man panicked and jumped from the rooftop and landed on a three-storey building.
Residents of the building rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station said detailed information about the deceased could not be known immediately.
The OC also said the police arrested four men and six girls from the hotel for unsocial activities.
