Stay order on Mamun's HC bail upheld
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a chamber judge's order staying a High Court order that granted bail to controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in a money laundering case.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim passed the order after granting a petition filed by the government.
On October 26 last year, Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Cantonment Police Station against Mamun on charges of laundering over Tk 20 crore.
On January 28, the HC granted him bail.
The Appellate Division on January 31 stayed the HC order for seven days and asked the government to file the regular leave to appeal petition with the apex court against the HC verdict within this period.
The stay order was later extended.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appeared for the government while barrister Rafique-ul Huq for Mamun.
