Delink trade from politics: MCCI

The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) said yesterday political relations should not affect trade cooperation between countries.
In a statement, MCCI President M Anis Ud Dowla stressed efforts to promote two-way trade between Bangladesh and India.
The statement came after the chamber chief's meeting with a delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CCI) in Dhaka yesterday.
Only for political reasons, Safta (South Asian Free Trade Area) could not see a success in true sense, whereas the regional trade in Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) was up 37 percent, Dowla said.
"With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India this January, we believe that there has been a paradigm shift in the mindset of the leaders of the two countries."
"And now it is the responsibility of business leaders to harness their resources and enterprise to benefit from the new opportunity," he said.
Syamal Gupta, special advisor to Tata International Ltd, is leading the 28-member delegation.
The MCCI president also said Bangladesh, after receiving its first sovereign rating on April 6, is now free from major macroeconomic imbalances.
"Bangladesh government also gives excellent policy for foreign investment," Dowla said.
