Ruta, syndicate polls today

Elections to the syndicate, deans' committee, academic council, finance committee, planning and development committee of Rajshahi University (RU) and RU Teachers Association (Ruta) will be held today.
The elections will be going on from 8:00am to 2:00pm at Juberi Bhaban.
Prof MA Bari, registrar of the university and returning officer of the elections, said a total of 1,300 voters would vote for 21 posts in several administrative categories and 15 executive posts for Ruta elections.
A total of 108 candidates under three panels -- yellow, white and golden panels -- will compete in the elections, he added.
RU teachers will elect five members to the syndicate and eight members to deans' committee, six members to academic council, one member to finance committee as well as planning and development committee and 15 executive posts of Ruta.
Sources said pro-Awami League teachers, including Progressive Teachers Society (PTS), have been contesting the polls under yellow panel while pro-BNP-Jamaat alliance is under white panel.
Besides, a faction of BNP teachers is in the race under the golden panel as the teachers have formed the panel recently terming white panel loyal to Jamaat politics.
The last elections to syndicate, deans' committee, academic council, finance committee and planning and development committee of the university were held on 2005 while the two-year tenure of the syndicate and deans' committee expired in 2007 and the three-year tenure of the finance committee expired in 2008.
