DST and we
Last year when daylight saving was introduced, people did not oppose it, most people accepted it. They adjusted to the changed situation.
Of course, there were some people who did not change their watches and followed the old time. But I believe, over all, people liked the idea and enjoyed longer days, especially, the working people. Most of them could reach home from work before it was dark.
However, when the government wanted to take advantage of the situation and extended the daylight saving system even after the beginning of the winter, people did not like that. Especially, the parents of school going children, as they had to start from home when it was still dark in the morning.
But most people accepted the idea during the summer and I think there are advantages of daylight saving system which our country could use. The most obvious one is, of course, saving electricity, around 200 megawatts according to the government. This is a very crucial matter for a country like ours where load shedding is an integral part of our life. Since there is no hope that the situation will improve soon, so whatever, small amount we could save and give relief to the people in the coming hot summer, I think we should avail.
Another advantage that I could think of is that since the days are longer, so the office goers could return home before it becomes dark.
This is especially advantageous for the female workforce. They would feel safer to commute with the daylight still there.
I have read what Dr. Mohammad Zafar Iqbal wrote in Prothom Alo against the time changing. He is one of my favourite writers. I enjoy his books immensely. But I do not agree with him on this issue. I believe, if the government keeps the daylight saving system during the summer only (from 1st April to 31st October) then people will get the benefit and will not suffer from much inconvenience.
We need saving electricity in whatever small amount it may be. And regarding what Dr. Mohammad Zafar Iqbal said about the beauty of time, I would like to mention that he would get five months every year (from November to March) to enjoy that beauty. In a developing country like ours where there are so many problems, if a little relief could be given from load shedding then we should be ready to accept a little inconvenience of changing our watches. Also, in our country and globally, the energy crisis will increase further, so we should go for saving power.
Last year, most people opposed the time change because the government did not change back to the original time during the winter. So, if the government sticks to the daylight saving during the summer like other countries then people will accept it.
A few days back, the government announced that they will not introduce the daylight saving again. But I hope the government rethinks its decision and if necessary discuss it with different groups of people and reintroduce it.
