Centenary of “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” celebrated
“Those, who commissioned Selma Lagerlof to write The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, might not have been pleased but millions of children across the globe became fascinated with Nils' journey and our children will not be any different, as the book is translated into Bangla,” said former chief adviser of caretaker government, Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman on the launching ceremony of the first Nobel Prize-winning book by a female writer, says a press release.
Justice Habibur Rahman presided over the programme.
Bulbul Sarwar translated the book. Oitijjhya has published the book.
The programme was held at the Goethe-Institut Bangladesh arranged on November 24.
Britt F Hagstrom, the Swedish Ambassador in Bangladesh, was the chief guest at the programme. In her speech, Hagstrom said, “Selma Lagerlof wrote this book upon request of Sweden Elementary Teachers Association as a textbook for children. I'm pleased that it is translated into Bangla and I hope that more books like Adventures of Nils will be published here.”
Among others, litterateur Abdus Shakoor, novelist Rizia Rahman, Bulbul Sarwar and chief executive of Oitijjhya Arifur Rahman Nayeem spoke at the programme.
About the translation, Bulbul Sarwar said, “Apart from marking the centenary of the book, I wanted to offer this wonderful story to our young readers.”
Selma Lagerlof was born in Värmland, Sweden in November 20, 1858. The Wonderful Adventures of Nils was published in 1907. Selma Lagerlof received the Noble Prize for the book in 1909.
