Policewomen account for 2pc of police force
Policewomen account for only two percent of total police force, which is a frustrating figure, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner yesterday.
DMP Commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque said this at a reception accorded to women working in the police department on the occasion of 100th anniversary of International Women's Day at Rajarbagh Police lines auditorium.
Bangladesh Police has around 1.24 lakh personnel. Of them, some 2,200 police are women law enforcers.
Speakers at the programme said Britain has 25 percent women police personnel, Singapore 19.1 percent, Australia 16.5 percent, Sri Lanka 5.3 percent and India 3 percent but Bangladesh shows the lowest percentage of women police with only two percent.
Speaking as the chief guest, Inspector General of Police Nur Mohammad said women police have been holding firm footing in the department with professionalism.
DIG Fatema as the special guest said there is a popular misconception about the capacity of women police, as it is believed that the main task of police is to arrest criminals.
