7 Shibir men held in morning, get bail in afternoon
The police arrested seven activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir from two dormitories at Dhaka University in the early hours of yesterday for suspicious activities.
However, they were granted bail by a Dhaka court in the afternoon. The court also rejected an appeal of the police for a five-day remand.
Six of them were picked up from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and the other from Ziaur Rahman Hall at around 4:30am.
Students of the halls handed over the Shibir activists to the police when they went to the hall following information from the hall authorities, Officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station Rezaul Karim said.
The police first took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and they were given first aid as they had marks of injuries in their bodies, he said. Later, they were taken to Shahbagh Police station.
"The Shibir activists were holding a secret meeting on the roof of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. We arrested them for suspicious activities and sent them to the court," OC Rezaul Karim said, adding that the arrestees admitted that they are involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir.
The arrestees are Md Abdullah, Abdul Wahab Reza and Shah Alam of political science, Nasir Uddin of sociology, Masudur Rahman Nokib of international business, Mustak Ahmed of world religion, Munir Uddin Saiful of Arabic department.
Hall sources said some BCL activists found that the Shibir workers were holding a meeting on the roof of Bangabandhu Hall at around 12:15am and they also found some Shibir-related documents.
The BCL activists then confined them to Room No. 214 of the hall and handed over Shibir worker Reza to BCL leaders of Ziaur Rahman Hall.
General Secretary of Bangabandhu Hall BCL Nabiruzzaman Babu said he and hall unit president Shaheen Ahmed filed a case accusing the Shibir men of plotting subversive activities.
