Two alleged criminals were killed in a ''crossfire'' between their cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion yesterday in South Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital.
They were identified as Pappu, 25, and Abdus Sattar, 22, both residents of the area.
Nil Utpal Dey, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station, told The Daily Star that the two were accused in several cases including murder and extortion charges.
Rab said acting on a tip-off that two criminal groups--Jahangir and Kachi groups--were confronting each other near a textile mill in Mirersharia area of South Keraniganj, they conducted a raid in the area around 3:00am.
Sensing presence of the elite forces, the criminal groups opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate.
At one stage of the “gunfight”, both Pappu and Sattar fell in the line of fire and died on the spot, Rab claimed.
