Eleven killed in road accidents
Eleven people, including a female ready-made garment (RMG) worker and minor boys, were killed and 11 injured in separate road accidents across the country in the last 24 hours.
Five people were killed and eight others injured as a human hauler turned turtle being dashed by a bus at Palashbari under Ashulia Police Station last night, reports UNB.
Two of the deceased were identified as Rahima Khatun, 55, and her two-and-a half-year-old grandson Almas, of Joykrishnapur village at Pangsha upazila under Rajbari.
Police said the human hauler 'Laguna' overturned around 7:15pm as the Dhaka-bound bus of Borak Paribahan smashed it, killing the five on the spot and injuring others.
The injured included Rahima's husband Wahab Sheikh and Almas' mother Marjina Begum. They were admitted to local clinics.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital morgue for autopsies.
Our Chittagong Staff Correspondent reports: A female RMG worker was killed in a road accident at Nimtala in the port city of Chittagong yesterday morning.
The victim, identified as Nazma Akhter, 30, a worker of Delta Fashion near Barik Building intersection, was going to her workplace by a rickshaw when the accident occurred.
Police said the worker was seriously injured when a speeding bus knocked the rickshaw from behind around 8.00am and ran over her.
The ill-fated succumbed to her injuries on way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Police arrested the driver identified as Solaiman Ripon, 27, and seized the bus.
Our Correspondent from Sirajganj adds: An official of Delta Life Insurance Company was killed in a road accident on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway in Hatikumrul area in Sirajganj.
The victim was identified as Shariful Islam, 32, of Mohisruti village at Tarash upazila. He was also the in-charge of the local office of the company.
Police said the accident occurred around 2.00pm when a Rajshahi-bound bus of National Paribahan hit his motorbike from behind, killing him on the spot.
Our Thakurgaon Correspondent says: A minor boy was crushed under the wheels of a goods-laden truck on the Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway at BRTC Bus Stand here.
The deceased was identified as Himel, 5, son of Mokbul Hossain, of Islamnagar village under Sadar upazila.
Police said the accident took place around 11:30am when a Panchagarh-bound goods-laden speeding truck crushed the boy while he was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
The truck driver and helper managed to flee the spot with their vehicle.
Meanwhile, two BCL activists were critically injured in a road accident on Wednesday evening in front of Thakurgaon Circuit House when their motorcycle collided head-on with a rickshaw, leaving them critically injured.
The injured were identified as Shifat, 22, son of Shajahan Ali of Halpara village, and Anamul Haque, 22, son of Nurul Haque of Tikapara village in the town.
Our Correspondent from Kurigram adds: An Ansar member was killed in a road accident on the district food office premises.
The deceased was identified as Sayed Ali, 45, of Halokhana union under Sadar upazila here and member of Kurigram Sadar unit Ansar.
Witnesses said a speeding microbus hit him head-on around 1:30pm while he was coming to the college intersection area by a bicycle.
Locals rushed him to Kurigram Sadar Hospital in a critical condition.
When the condition of Sayed deteriorated, the hospital referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died at 5:30pm.
Our Dinajpur Correspondent adds: A class III student was killed in a road accident here in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Md Jummatun Islam, 10, son of Saiful Islam of Shalaipur village under Parbatipur upazila.
Police said a speeding Dinajpur-bound truck crushed him under its wheels while he was crossing the highway at Lakkhitala village around 2:30pm. He died on the spot.
After the accident, angry villagers blocked the Dinajpur-Bogra highway at Lakkhitala for two hours that left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway.
Earlier on Wednesday, an elderly man was killed in road accident at Birampur upazila.
The man was identified as Md Abdul Kuddus, 65, son of late Latif Uddin of Monirampur village of the same upazila.
Staff Correspondent from Bogra reports: A schoolgirl was seriously injured when a sand-laden truck hit her at Manikchawk under Sadar upazila here yesterday.
Police said Kajali, 11, a student of class six of Manikchawk High School, was seriously injured when a truck hit her on her way back home from the school.
She was first taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka in the afternoon.
Being enraged, locals set fire to the truck.
