Clash over naming of graveyard
At least 10 people, including a police constable, were injured during a clash between the people of two villages over naming of a graveyard in Ishwardi upazila of the district on Monday night.
Police said the trouble began at around 8:00pm when the villagers of Kharjani tried to hang a signboard at the entrance of the graveyard, naming it as Kharjani central graveyard.
Dadpur villagers resisted the bid and had an altercation with the villagers of Kharjani. At one stage, they locked in a clash that continued for two hours. Both sides hurled brickbats at each other and used iron rods, sticks and other weapons during the clash, leaving 10 people, including a policeman, injured.
Ishwardi police charged batons, dispersed the clashing groups and took control of the area. Additional police have been deployed in and around the graveyard, which is situated on the border of the two villages.
Of the injured, police constable Eunus Ali and villagers Helal, Imdadul and Insaaf were admitted to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex while the rest given first aid.
Ishwardi police filed a case in connection with the incident. They arrested 18 people from the two villages yesterday morning.
