Clash in Kolkata over Taslima Nasreen
Activists of a Muslim Forum in Kolkata city clashed with police yesterday demanding expulsion of Taslima Nasreen, a Bangladesh born controversial writer, from India.
The activists of All India Minority Forum (AIMF) fought a pitched battle with the police and threw stones at them, reports Press Trust of India.
Traffic on the arterial AJC Bose Road came to a halt during the agitation as violence spread to the city's Muslim-dominated Park Circus, Ripon Street and other places.
The AIMF had called for road blockade yesterday protesting extension of visa to Taslima. The demonstrators demanded that she should be expelled from India.
Facing threats on life for her controversial writings Taslima had taken shelter in India and has been living there for the last ten years.
Publication of her book Lajja in early 90s reportedly financed by Ananda Bazar Group depicted imaginary atrocities on the minority in Bangladesh.
Taslima was reportedly roughed up Hyderabad Press Club in India on April 19 when she was there for launching Telegu version of her book Sokhe.
