Blaze kills 7 in Japan Garden City
Seven of a family including two kids were killed in a fire at a multi-storey apartment block in the city’s Mohammadpur area last night.
The fire originated at around 10:15pm on the 10th floor of building-6 at Japan Garden City, said witnesses.
Billows of smoke spiralling upwards caused panic among the flat residents and the neighbourhood.
Fire brigade officials rushed to the scene immediately and brought the flames under control with the help of the neighbours after around an hour’s efforts.
At around 11:45pm, they found seven bodies lying on the staircase near the 14th floor.
Fire officials said the victims might have been trying to flee to safety on the roof. But the door to the roof was locked, and they suffocated to death.
All seven were tenants of flat-1402 on the 13th floor of the building-6.
The victims were identified as Rafiqul Islam, 50+, his wife Rashida, 45, his younger brother Tariqul Islam, 48, his wife Kaniz Fatema Rupa, 40, Tariqul’s son Fahim, 12, daughter Ayesha, 7, and domestic help Rozina, 12.
Fahim was a class-VII student of Residential Model School and Ayesha of class-I of Mohammadpur Preparatory.
Abu Mohammad Nayeem Shahidullah, director general of fire brigade, told The Daily Star gas leak or short circuit might have caused the fire. The inflammable materials on the 10th floor most probably had fed the fire, he added.
There were fire alarm systems, but no equipment to douse flames, added the fire brigade DG.
An occupant of a flat in building-19 said no fire systems were operative and firefighting vehicles took too much time to reach the scene.
Japan Garden City, a sprawling apartment block on the Ring Road under Adabar Police Station, has 23 16-storey buildings accommodating around 10 thousand people.
