Shoplifting drama at Gatwick
The secretary general of the Croatian Football Association was briefly arrested for alleged shoplifting at London's Gatwick airport on the eve of a crunch Euro 2008 qualifier against England, police said Wednesday.
Zorislav Srebric, 67, was held for a few hours on Tuesday after allegedly being caught stealing stationery at a newsagent in the terminal but was released without charge, a police source said.
"A 67-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft ... at Gatwick Airport's South Terminal," a police spokesman said.
In Zagreb, the Croatian FA described the allegations as "nonsense," explaining that Srebric briefly left the newsstand before paying in order to shepherd his players through airport control.
"London policeman misinterpreted that as evasion of paying, which is nonsense," it said in a statement.
"To make the absurdity of the situation bigger, he was taken to the police station, where it was soon established it was a misunderstanding, but due to procedure, instead of five minutes, he was held for some time," the statement said.
England were preparing to play Croatia at Wembley Wednesday evening, and need at least a draw to qualify for the tournament.
