JMB man gets 10yrs RI
Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal yesterday awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) to JMB operative Abdul Aziz alias Hanif for the bomb blast near Mallikpur bridge in Sunamganj upazila Sadar on August 17 of 2005.
The Judge, Dipyoman Sarker, also fined him Tk 5,000 in default to suffer one year more in prison.
The judge acquitted another JMB operative Md Salahuddin alias Salehin of the charges. Both the accused were present on the dock during the judgement.
Between 11:00am and 11:30am on August 17 of 2005, blasts took place at six points in Sunamganj district town.
Following cases for blasts near the offices of Judge's Court, deputy commissioner and Bar association, and Eidgah, Mollikpur and Bus Stand area, separate charge sheets were filed against JMB operatives Hanif and Salehin for the blasts at six places.
Hanif gave confessional statement before a magistrate last year. Hanif and Salehin were given 10 years RI and fined Tk 5,000 in default to suffer one year more each for each of the five other blasts in the town on August 17 of 2005.
Earlier on September 12, Tribunal Judge Dipyoman Sarker awarded Hanif 14 years RI in a different case for storing explosives.
Abdul Aziz alias Hanif, an aide of hanged JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was caught on March 2 of 2006 with Rahman and others.
