Journo gets bail in extortion cases
Journalist and human rights activist Jahangir Alam Aakash was freed on bail yesterday after 27 days in Rajshahi Central Jail on extortion charges.
The District and Sessions Judge on Monday ordered his bail in the extortion case. Earlier on November 8, a court relieved him of EPR charges.
Aakash, Rajshahi Union of Journalists general secretary, Rajshahi bureau reporter of Bengali Daily Sangbad and now defunct CSB News, was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on October 24.
He is also Rajshahi regional coordinator of Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights.
His family members claimed that Aakash was implicated in two extortion cases with an ulterior motive by a contractor and father of an accused in a rape case.
Aakash claimed that both the plaintiffs were angry with him for publishing reports against them.
