Mystic poet Gias Uddin Ahmed's birth anniversary observed
To celebrate 72nd birth anniversary of mystic poet and singer Gias Uddin Ahmed a special programme was held in Sylhet recently. The programme took place at Saroda Hall in the city and included competitions for children, cultural show and a discussion.
Human rights activist Sultana Kamal attended the meeting as the chief guest. President of the Gias Uddin Ahmed Geeti Sangshad, Himangshu Biswas chaired the event while renowned folk singer Chandrabati Roy Barman attended as a special guest.
Shamim Ahmed, general secretary of the organisation, delivered the welcome speech. Gias Uddin Ahmed's son and cultural activist Anwar Hossain Rony also spoke on the occasion. Head of the Bangla Department, MC College, Professor Nandalal Sharma and head of the Bangla Department, Madan Mohan College, Professor Abul Fateh Fattah were the other discussants.
In her speech, the chief guest said that Gias Uddin had immense knowledge on the folk culture of Sylhet as well as the rest of the country. He was a man who could never be restrained by the narrowness of communality.
Over a hundred children took part in the folk song competition. Drishti Talukder, Chandrika Dey and Popy Kar stood first in 'Ka', 'Kha' and 'Ga' group respectively.
