<i>Families rush to jail </i>
The jail authorities last evening received the copy of the verdict from the Appellate Division that refused to review the death sentence in Bangabandhu assassination case and informed the five convicts about it.
The five convicts are Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bazlul Huda and AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed.
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday told reporters that the five convicts would be executed by January 31 as per the jail code.
Senior Jail Superintendent Touhidur Rahman of the Dhaka Central Jail told The Daily Star they received the Appellate Division order in the afternoon and informed the convicts about it.
He added he also received last night the copy of the decision of the president about Farooq Rahman's mercy petition.
Earlier, three mercy petitions of Lt Col (retd) Mohiuddin Ahmed (artillery), Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda and Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin (lancer) had been rejected by President Zillur Rahman.
The remaining death convict, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan declined to seek presidential clemency, said the jail super.
Jail sources say they have already completed all the preparations to hang the convicts by setting up two more new gallows in the Dhaka jail where two gallows already exist.
The sources hint that the five convicts might be hanged in Dhaka jail.
Meanwhile, as many as 64 people of the five convicts' families and relatives visited them in jail in the afternoon as the authorities invited them over phone.
Bazlul Huda's wife Nafiza Mariam and 22 others went to jail to meet him, while AKM Mohiuddin was visited by 20 people including his wife.
The relatives of Huda and Mohiuddin entered the jail in four groups.
Besides, 12 members from the family of Sultan Shahriar, five members from the family of Mohiuddin and four members from the family of Farooq Rahman visited the detained convicts.
The relatives include the wives, mothers, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and other close relatives.
