20 including 3 cops hurt in Cox's Bazar
At least 20 people including three policemen were injured in a clash between police and mob over a trifling matter at Gorokghata Bazar under Moheshkhali municipality in Cox's Bazar yesterday.
The clash occurred when police tried to quell violence between two groups of feuding labourers at Moheshkhali court building premises at noon.
Police and witnesses said, the clash ensued when Mohammad Yasin, a labour leader of Putibila beat up two other labour leaders of Sikderpara named Atuallah and Ruhul Amin over a trifle matter at around 11.30 am yesterday.
As the news spread, supporters of Atuallah, equipped with lethal weapons, rushed to Gorokghata Bazar intersection and took position. Then supporters of Yasin attempted to attack their rivals. At this stage, police intervened and chased the feuding groups ensuing a clash for one hour and injuring 20 including policemen.
Police opened 17 rounds of blank shots to bring the situation under control.
Of the injured, seven were admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital and Moheshkhali Upazila Health Complex. They are police ASI Mujibur Rahman, 49, SI Liton Das, 40, Constable Emran Hossain, 32, driver Sabbir Ahmed, 40, Abu Bakkar, 32 pedestrian Shafi Alam, 65 and Shamsul Alam, 32.
