10 killed in road crashes
At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Savar, Chittagong, Bogra and Gaibandha yesterday.
UNB from Gazipur reports: Three friends riding on a motorcycle were killed in a road accident at Porabari in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police said Rana, 25, and Kajal, 32, died on the spot as a covered van hit their motorcycle in the afternoon.
Another rider Motaleb, 31, injured in the accident succumbed to his injuries at Sadar Hospital.
Police later seized the covered van, but its driver managed to escape.
The three friends, who hailed from Dighirchala in Sadar upazila, met the accident while going to Masterbari for catching fish.
A report from Savar adds: A college student was crushed under the wheels of a bus in C&B bus stand area on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar yesterday.
The dead was identified as Murad Hossain, an HSC examinee from Dhamrai Government College.
Witnesses said a bus ran over Murad near Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) at 12:00 noon when he was waiting for a bus to go the college.
Police seized the bus but the driver and helper managed to flee.
As the death news spread, students of the college rushed to the spot and blocked the road for three hours from 1:00pm.
Later, local administration and police brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, Two people were killed and 10 others injured as a bus hit a tempo at Badamtali under Chandanaish upazila in Chittagong yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Haque, 45, and Alamghir, 25, of Elahabad village in the upazila.
Police and witnesses said the bus hit the tempo as its driver lost his control over the steering at about 1:00pm, leaving two tempo passengers dead on the spot and 10 others injured.
A van-puller and a pedestrian were also injured in the accident.
The injured were admitted to local upazila health complex and clines.
However, the bus driver and helper managed to flee the scene.
Police sent the bodies to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Another report from Bogra adds: Two people were killed and two others injured in a road crash on Bogra-Rangpur highway at Thengamara in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Police said the accident occurred at around 3:00am when a Dhaka-bound cow-laden truck from Rangpur plunged into a roadside ditch hitting an electric pole, killing two cattle traders and five cows on the spot.
The two injured cattle traders were rushed to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hospital.
Police sent the bodies to hospital morgue for autopsy.
Our correspondent from Gaibandha adds: Two people were killed and eight others injured as a tempo and truck collided head-on on Bogra-Rangpur highway at Kalitola yesterday.
Highway police said the accident occurred when a tempo with passengers on board was going to Gobindaganj, leaving tempo passengers Abu Sayeed Khandker, 60, and Abdur Rashid, 49, dead on the spot and eight others injured.
Truck driver and helper managed to flee.
