Death in road crash sparks protest
Townspeople yesterday noon brought out a procession, held rally and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) demanding punishment to the driver who crushed a woman under the wheels of his truck Sunday afternoon.
Organised by Nagorik Unnayan Forum, an NGO, they paraded the main streets before holding the rally in front of the DC's office.
The speakers at the rally demanded ban on plying of trucks on the town streets from dawn to 8:00pm.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to DC Salehuddin demanding appropriate steps in this regard.
Rubia Akter, 36, wife of poor Abdul Halim of West Dashara, was killed on the spot and her daughter Seba and son Sejan were injured when a town bound sand--laden truck hit her rickshaw at around 5:00pm near Bewtha fire service station on Bewtha road on Sunday.
Rubia was retuning home with her two kids after visiting Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela held at Manikganj Government Boys' High School playground.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station Azizul Haque said the victim's husband yesterday filed a case with the police station concerned. Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee.
