<i>About a thousand join Gaibandha math fest</i>
A regional 'mathematics festival' was held at Gaibandha Government Boys' High School ground on Saturday, with participation of 965 students from 84 institutions of Gaibandha, Joypurhat, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
Such programmes will help to develop love for mathematics among children and encourage the future generation as well as their parents, said speakers at the festival organised by Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee.
They sought cooperation of all to develop interest on mathematics among the children, so that they are not afraid to study science.
Shahana Banu, headmistress of Gaibandha Government Boys' High School, inaugurated the programme hoisting the national flag and the mathematics Olympiad flag while Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam gave the welcome speech to the audience.
Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, vice-president of Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee, FR Sarker, general secretary of Bangladesh Astronomical Society, Prof Anwarul Islam Dipu of Shahjalal Science and Technology University, Prof Atika Banu, principal of Gaibandha Government Mohila College spoke, among others.
At the mathematics contest session, 60 winners from four groups were handed over medals, certificates and T-shirts.
The guests answered different questions from the students participating at the programme. Those who threw best questions relating to mathematics and science also got prizes.
Local artistes of Udichi Shilpi Gosthi entertained the audience with songs.
Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd sponsored the mathematics Olympiad programme while the Daily Prothom Alo helped its overall management.
