Legal notice on govt to form probe body

A legal notice was served yesterday on the government to constitute an inquiry commission within seven days to investigate the offences of murder, rape, torture, etc committed immediately after the 2001 parliamentary election upon the minorities and the opposition supporters.
Following a writ petition, the High Court, on May 6 this year, in a verdict directed the government to form an inquiry commission within two months, and to get the report from the commission within six months after its formation.
As the government did not comply with the High Court directives, Advocate Manzill Murshid served the legal notice asking the government to constitute the inquiry commission as per the court directive.
He told The Daily Star that he would file a contempt of court petition against the government if it does not form the commission within seven days.
Manzill Murshid, who earlier moved the writ petition on behalf of the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), a human rights organisation, sent the notice to the home secretary, secretary to prime minister office, secretary to the Cabinet Division and the Inspector General of Police to comply with the High Court directives.
