Release of detained DU teachers, students demanded
A number of Dhaka University teachers belonging to pro-Awami League (AL) Blue Panel yesterday reiterated their demand for the release of detained teachers and students of the university.
A delegation of the teachers met Vice-Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz and told him that the condition of Prof Anwar Hossain, one of the detainees, is critical.
Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, acting dean of social sciences faculty, said, "We met the vice-chancellor to request him to take necessary steps for the release of our colleagues and students, who are suffering in inhuman conditions in the jail."
Prof Anwar Hossain, general secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association and also the dean of biological sciences faculty, has been sick since he was arrested in the wake of the August 20-22 campus violence.
He was shifted to BSMMU on November 5 as his condition deteriorated, one of his family members said.
Three other teachers, including Duta President and dean of arts faculty Prof Sadurl Amin, Dean of social sciences faculty Prof Harun-or-Rashid and Prof Neem Chandra Bhowmik, and nine students were arrested following the campus violence.
