Huji man on fresh remand in Ramna Batamul blast case
A Dhaka court yesterday placed Harkatul Jihad (Huji) activist Maulana Abdul Latif, a close aide to Huji operations commander Mufti Abdul Hannan, on a two-day fresh remand in connection with the Ramna Batamul blast in 2001.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Mahmud passed the order after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Abu Hena Mohammad Yusuf, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced him before the court with a five-day remand prayer. He was produced before the court on completion of his three-day remand.
In the forwarding report, the IO said Latif was directly involved with the bomb blast at the Pahela Baishakh celebrations in Ramna Batamul. He needs to be quizzed to find out more information about the incident, the IO added.
On November 19 last year, Hannan gave a confessional statement to a magistrate admitting his involvement in the bomb blast.
He said seven Huji operatives including two Dhaka College students--Hasan and Omar Faruq--carried out the attack. The other attackers were Abu Taher, Sheikh Farid, Abu Bakar, Yeahia and Abdul Hye.
The attack left 10 people dead and several others injured on April 14, 2001.
Police so far arrested 21 people in connection with the blast. Of them, nine including Hannan are now in jail. The rest were released on bail.
