<i>Bury Birshrestha Hamidur Rahman's remains in Moulvibazar</i>
Freedom fighters and cross sections of people in Moulvibazar have demanded burial of remains of Birshrestha Sipahi Hamidur Rahman in the district, where he sacrificed his life during the Liberation War.
A space has been preserved for his grave at the newly constructed monument near Dholoi border outpost (BOP) in Kamalganj upazila, where he died fighting against the Pakistani forces.
The freedom fighters made the demand while talking to this correspondent.
The government has taken an initiative to bring the remains of liberation war hero Bir Shrestha Sipahi Hamidur Rahman from Ambasa in Tripura state of India.
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at a recent meeting in Dhaka decided to bring the remains to Bangladesh in December, the month of victory.
It is learnt that the remains would be buried at the Martyr Intellectuals Graveyard in Dhaka.
Earlier, remains of Bir Shrestha Flight Lt. Motiur Rahman was brought from Pakistan on June 24 last year.
The freedom fighters said it would be easy to bring remains of Bir Shrestha Hamidur Rahman from Ambasa in Tripura to Bangladesh through Chatlapur immigration check post under Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar. Distance between Ambasa and Chatlapur immigration check post is only 60 kilometers.
The remains can also be brought through Dholoi frontier (Moulvibazar), which is only 24 kilometers from Ambasa. Hamidur Rahman sacrificed his life in a battle in Dholoi in 1971.
Sipahi Hamidur Rahman is among seven war heroes who were awarded the top title of Bir Srestha after independence.
In 1992, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) constructed a monument to Bir Shrestha Sipahi Hamidur Rahman near Dholoi BOP. Later the ministry of liberation war affairs constructed another monument at Dholoi, keeping a space for burial of the remains of Bir Shrestha Sipahi Hamidur Rahman.
Bhanugach-Madhabpur road in Kamalganj municipality was renamed as 'Bir Shrestha Hamidur Rahman road.
This correspondent talked to Dewan Abul Khayer Chaudhury, former commander of Moulvibazar district unit of Bangladesh Muktijudhdha Sangsad, and freedom fighters AK Sujaul Karim, Dewan Abdul Wahab Chaudhury, Anu Miah, SM Mujib and Jamal Uddin.
They said people of Moulvibazar and freedom fighters demand burial of remains of Bir Shrestha Sipahi Hamidur Rahman at Dholoi. If it is not possible, then the coffin should be brought here for few hours to allow people express their tributes, they said.
