Biplob takes his “Britter Bairey” to Int’l Film Festival of India

Biplob’s “Britter Bairey”, starring Jayanta Chattopadhyay, will be pitted against 15 feature films from Asia, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Africa at the festival.

Young Bangladeshi director Golam Rabbani Biplob left Panaji, Goa, the venue of the 38th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) with happy memories of his debut film “Swapnadanay” winning a Silver Peacock at the event two years ago.
He returns to the same venue on November 30 after a break of one year with his second offering “Britter Bairey” hoping that history will not just repeat itself but will be made if the movie can win a bigger award in the competitive section of the festival.
“Britter Bairey”, starring Jayanta Chattopadhyay and Firoz Kabir among others, will be pitted against 15 feature films from Asia, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Africa. Besides Bangladesh, films which are vying for honours in the competition section are drawn from Brazil, China, India, Kazakhstan, Iran, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Argentina.
In 2006, it was Abu Sayeed's feature film, which had won the Silver Peacock at the IFFI in Panaji.
The jury is headed by noted Brazilian director Joao Batista de Andrade and includes Vic Sarin (Canada), Kenichi Okubu (Japan), actress Sarika (India) and Jean-Michel Frodon (France).
The two Indian entries in the competition are Atanu Ghosh's Bengali film “Angshuman-er Chhobi” and Satish Manwar's Marathi film “Gabricha Paus”
The International Film Festival of India 2009 started at Kala Academy, Panaji yesterday with the Chinese period drama "Wheat" as the opening film. The film is set in 260 BC when China was mired in a long and bloody war between the Qin and the Zhao that could not be settled for decades.
Veteran Indian actress Waheeda Rehman was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Bollywood actress Asin, who shot into fame with her role in Aamir Khan-starrer super-hit film “Ghajini”, was a special guest.
The 11-day extravaganza is divided into various sections: Film Programmes, Non Film Programmes, Film Bazaar, Short Film Centre and Cultural Activities.
The Film Programming is the core of the festival and screens nearly 300 films and the most popular sections include competitions for feature films from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Cinema of the World, Tributes, Homage, Retrospectives, Country Focus films, Indian Panorama and specially curated sections.
The 'Cinema of the World' section this year will showcase more than 55 films from around 47 countries and films from Croatia, Estonia, Italy, and Poland will be screened under the 'Country Focus' section
The Indian screenings would also feature a retro of golden jubilee hit films of Asha Parekh in "Dil De Ke Dekho" and "Kati Patang" (Hindi), Sharmila Tagore and Soumitra Chatterjee in Satyajit Ray's "Apur Sansar" (Bengali).
